Learn How to Make an Anthurium Card

Card Making Inspired by A Trip to Hilo.

A couple of months ago my friend Zeny and I were talking on the phone about how fun it would be to go shopping in Hilo. Zeny said, “We should plan to go next year during the Merry Monarch Festival,” my reply was, “Next year!!! Why don’t we go this week?” And so we did.

Of course, this trip inspired me in card design so I’m sharing my adventure along with a tutorial on how to make an Anthurium card!

Our first stop in Hilo was at a boutique we were anxious to visit. When we got to the front door we saw a sign that said they were closed and only open on Saturday! We were disappointed as we were scheduled to head back home that day! We contemplated changing our tickets but decided to check out a new boutique that someone told us about called Ola Hou.

It was a short drive to this new boutique. When we arrived we found out that they weren’t open either. In fact, that Saturday was going to be their GRAND OPENING weekend. We started to laugh realizing that perhaps we should have done a little more research before jumping on the plane!

Even though they were closed, we were super blessed to meet Sharaya, the owner of Ola Hou, who invited us to return the next day to shop during a private soft launch event. We were honored and blessed by her generosity and aloha spirit.

The next day we returned and discovered that this boutique is very special. The apparel is fashionable, modern aloha ware! In fact, this past February they did a runway show in New York during fashion week! It was fun to hear Sharaya share the inspiration behind each design. Sharaya has such a beautiful spirit which is reflected in the incredible designs she creates.

I am SO glad we were invited to shop early. Both Zeny and I purchased multiple items. My favorite was a maxi-length anthurium dress that is so comfortable. This is the dress that inspired the cards I will share with you today!

Fashion meets card making!

I found the best way to create the Anthurium for the card was to use one of the Hearts from the Heart Punch Pack. To create the center of the flower I used a die from Organic Beauty Dies. I also used Laura’s Tape Technique, Foam Adhesive Sheets, and the Stripes Embossing folder to add texture to the flower. The first Anthurium card I made was inspired by the colors in my Ola Hou dress.

I loved the colors but wanted to change the stems to make them look more natural. So, in the 2nd Anthurium card I used the Palms Dies to die cut stem. I think they look better this way, don’t you?

In this photo, you can really see the texture of the flower as well as some of the Iridescent Rhinestone Jewels I added to the front of the card.

I simplified this card to complete my class and came up with the Anthurium card below. It featured 1 flower with a contrasting color center.

I am grateful to Sharaya and the staff at Ola Hou for making our trip to Hilo so special. I pray their business will be a great success as people discover the beautiful line of products they have available, not only in their physical store but online too. You can visit Ola Hou Designs now. I look forward to ordering more in the future that I’m sure will inspire even more of my paper crafting projects.

Mahalo to Sharaya and the staff at Ola Hou for making our trip to Hilo so incredibly special.

Stamped Blessings,

Cindy
